New flood maps mean insurance changes for Lexington County homeowners

Officials with FEMA are in the midst of updating flood hazard maps across the country, and changes to Lexington County’s maps will affect hundreds of homeowners.

While the timing of the update might seem to coincide with last year’s historic rainfall, the new flood hazard maps were put together well before then, said Wrenn Barrett, the county’s public works director. FEMA officials performed an updated analysis of river flow, storm tides, rainfall and topographic surveys to determine where the biggest risks for flooding are today.
