There’s something special about summertime at home. The kids are outside playing, neighbors are gathering for cookouts, and the backyard becomes the center of family fun. And right in the middle of it all? Our pets—chasing tennis balls, lounging in the shade, and reminding us why they’re such an important part of the family.
At Southern Visions Real Estate, we know that a home isn’t just where you live—it’s where memories are made with the people (and pets!) you love most. As temperatures climb across the South, taking a few simple steps to keep your furry family members safe can help ensure everyone enjoys a happy, healthy summer.
1. Keep the Water Bowl Full (and Then Fill It Again)
If you've ever stepped outside during a Southern summer, you know how quickly the heat can sneak up on you. The same is true for our pets.
Fresh, cool water is one of the easiest ways to help pets stay comfortable. Consider placing water bowls in several locations around your home and yard, and bring water along whenever you head out for walks or adventures. According to the ASPCA, pets should always have access to fresh water and shade during hot weather to help prevent dehydration and heat-related illness.
A hydrated pet is a happy pet—and a happy pet makes for a happier home.
2. Let Them Enjoy the Shade
Pets love sunshine, but they also need a cool place to escape it.
Whether it's a shady spot beneath a favorite tree, a covered patio, or a cool room inside with the air conditioning running, make sure your pet always has a comfortable retreat from the heat.
One of the many joys of homeownership is creating spaces where every member of the family can relax—including the ones with paws.
3. Save Walks for the Coolest Parts of the Day
That afternoon pavement can get surprisingly hot. In fact, if it's uncomfortable for your hand, it's definitely uncomfortable for your pet's paws.
Early morning strolls and evening walks are often much more enjoyable for both pets and their humans. Plus, who doesn't love a peaceful sunset walk through the neighborhood?
Mobility Dog recommends avoiding the hottest parts of the day and being mindful of hot pavement, which can burn sensitive paw pads during the summer months.
4. Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car
We know most pet owners are already aware of this, but it's worth repeating every summer.
Even with cracked windows, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise dangerously fast. What feels like "just a few minutes" can quickly become a serious emergency for your pet.
The ASPCA warns that temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become dangerous within minutes—even when windows are partially open.
When in doubt, leave them at home where they're cool, comfortable, and waiting patiently for your return.
5. Watch for Signs They're Getting Too Hot
Pets can't tell us when they're uncomfortable, so it's important to watch for warning signs.
Keep an eye out for:
- Heavy panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy
- Difficulty breathing
- Weakness or dizziness
Veterinary experts at MedVet recommend watching for signs of heat stress such as excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or difficulty breathing and seeking veterinary care if symptoms become severe.
If your pet seems overheated, move them somewhere cool, offer fresh water, and contact your veterinarian if symptoms continue.
6. Make Water Play Safe
Many dogs love splashing in pools, sprinklers, lakes, and creeks during the summer months.
If your pet enjoys swimming, always supervise them around water and make sure they know how to safely get out of the pool. Some dogs are natural swimmers, while others may need a little extra help and confidence.
After swimming, a quick rinse can help remove chlorine, salt, or other irritants from their coat.
7. Don't Forget Summer Pest Protection
Summer fun unfortunately brings fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes along for the ride.
Keeping up with preventative treatments helps protect your pet from itchy bites and more serious health concerns. A quick conversation with your veterinarian can help ensure your pet is covered all season long.
The Heart of a Happy Home
When people think about their dream home, they often picture beautiful kitchens, spacious living rooms, and welcoming front porches. But for pet owners, it's often the little things that matter most—a fenced backyard, a sunny spot by the window, or a neighborhood perfect for evening walks.
Our pets give us unconditional love every day. They greet us at the door, keep us company, and turn ordinary houses into homes filled with joy.
This summer, taking a few extra precautions can help ensure your pets stay healthy, comfortable, and ready to enjoy every sunny day right alongside you.
As pet owners, we also have a responsibility to provide safe and comfortable living conditions year-round.
